ChrisP
After many years of planning and posting destination and routes for the runs. Plus the excellent reports with pictures etc. Our organisers have decided it was time to stand down and pass the baton on, a difficult act to follow. Our thanks go out to them. Unfortunately we have no volunteers at present to take it on. The meetings will still be at Tardebigge on Sundays 10:00 o'clock start maybe earlier if the summer comes. Those present will need to decide on Cafe stop and route. Also noted the lack of posting on the Club Website myself being guilty. There is generally lots viewing. Lets all try a little harder. I know the club is shrinking but hope we can keep things going as the rides with good company are always a pleasure. Hope to meet up on the road soon. TonyS
I'd like to echo what Chris has said, and add a few more comments. The club (any club) has always been dependent on members volunteering to organise Sunday runs, and many other equally important things such as social events, club races etc. and I am sure that the rank & file are all very grateful for this freely given work. I would not wish to embarrass them, but in recent years the activity of John, Moira and most recently Julie in arranging and reporting Sunday runs has been excellent, whilst Hilary, Chris and Ivor are key figures in other areas. Unfortunately, our regular riders are a. spread across a wide area of south Birmingham / north Worcs and b. getting older, thus regular weekly attendance and indeed getting to Tardebigge is not always possible or guaranteed. My own move out of Bromsgrove is an example of this. Organising implies some regular attendance at the meeting point, but does not necessarily mean every week - other clubs have a key organiser (Clubrun Secretary?) who posts run details, but also has a rota of him/her self and other members who take on the responsibility of leading the run. I have no answer as to how we can solve this issue unless we recruit newer (and perhaps younger) members who can easily meet at eg Tardebigge - however we have done it before when us 'older members' were ourselves 'younger'! The only sure way to reach all our members is to post details on the club website so that the meeting place is constant but destination (and possibly route) are provided so that others may join in. There are other social media platforms eg Facebook, WhatsApp which can be used but not all members will have (or want) access to them. This brings me to the WhatsApp group. The regular Tuesday run was started by Ken Haddon and myself when we retired. As others found the time to join us, and Covid lockdowns came and went, the group expanded, shrank and then expanded again. Whereas originally a group of 4, 5 or at most 6 would turn out, we have more recently occasionally seen anything up to a dozen or more at Defford. Quite rightly, Darren asked us post Covid to let him know in advance the numbers going, so that he could arrange/reserve tables and prepare for the invasion. As a result, Alan suggested and Moira created the group so that regular Tuesday riders could 'clock in' and Alan could inform Darren accordingly. I do not know what Darren would say if we told him twenty seats were required, but I can say that there was no intention of usurping the Sunday run arrangements. I hope, after a rather busy and disrupted winter, I can get out more frequently soon. Stay safe, everyone.
