TonyS
It is with great sadness that I have to report that Les Lowe, Speedwell BC, passed away this morning in Burton General Hospital after some years of ongoing health problems, and after suffering a heart attack last week. Les was well known all over the Midlands, and indeed the country. He recorded well over one million Kms in a lifetime of tricycle riding, broke a multitude of National and Midland RRA records, was a big supporter of Burton & South Derbys CAMRA, had a great collectiion of jazz and blues records, and was an all round great bloke. He will be sadly missed.
DaveM
Without looking through old result sheets I would not know if I ever came across this gentleman. I believe he was a member of the Saracen for a while. Yet another cycling legend leaves us.
TonyS
AFAIK Les was only a member of two clubs, the Speedwell and the Mercia. You probably came across him in Staffs, Shrops or Warwick events, Dave. He was also member of VTTA.
Sean Barker
Always sad to hear of a fellow cyclist “slipping off the back” as Eddie so eloquently phrases it. I consider myself a bit of a “mile muncher” (as Chris Kent has christened me) but Les’s achievements are mightily impressive.
DaveM
Sure enough, I found an event that you, Les and myself rode. The Lichfield City C & AC Laddie Grant Memorial Trophy '30' on the K16. Saturday 20th May 1972.
ChrisKENT
Very sad news a really great guy who I've had the privilege to know, ride with and compete against!!!
TonyS
Les got a good cyclists send off today. The cortege was led in for the final mile by several trikes, one tandem trike and several more bikes, ridden by cyclists from many clubs. A Guard of Honour was formed by friends in various club jerseys as the casket was carried into the Chapel. The Saracen was represented by Eddie & Mavis and myself. Les's many photographs, medals and certificates were on show afterwards and the usual cyclist's banter ensured several amusing tales were told. RIP Les.
