DaveM
The TT Season Closes in the Midlands The 2013 TT season finished off with four 10-mile events as far afield as Newport in Shropshire, Malvern and Coventry. Kicking off September the Leamington C&AC promoted an event on the A45 east of Coventry and then after a couple of quiet weekends both the Wrekinsport CC and VC Sevale (Malvern) ran 10-mile events on the last Saturday of the month. Finally, in early October, there was one last-chance event promoted by Coventry RC on the triangular K10 course based on Princethorpe and Ryton. Three riders made good performance improvements in these last events and earned the points they needed to move up a category. Firstly, a rider who is brand new to time trialling in the Midlands but who has clocked up fourteen open events since his first in April; Kean Bendelow (Worcester St John’s CC) has made huge progress and capped his season with three ‘22s’ so catapulting himself to 3rd-cat status and up 32 places in the rankings. Next, two riders have been promoted to 2nd-cat and the first of these only became a 3rd-cat last month! Simon Mitchell (Rugby RCC) claimed 4th place in the Leamington C&AC 10, his highest placing to date, with a very fast 21.02. So in two months he has moved from 4th-cat to 2nd-cat which is startling progress. However, our other new 2nd-cat is the seasoned campaigner and prolific supporter of Midlands events, Susan Semple (Stafford RC). Susan has ridden many Midlands events since the Rankings’ inception and has consistently maintained her 3rd-cat status but this month, for the very first time, she has achieved 2nd-cat. By means of a strong showing and 15th place overall in the Wrekinsport 10 she maintains her ranking of 2nd amongst the women, and she is one of only two women to currently be a 2nd-cat rider. Each month riders also appear in the categories for the first time when they initially complete five counting events. Well done to the following riders who have just made fresh appearances in the categories above 4th-cat: · Xavier Disley (University of Birmingham) – 1st cat · Pierre Guern (Leamington C&AC) – 2nd cat · Neill Coventry (Rugby RCC) – 2nd cat The rankings explained Points are scored by every rider who completes any solo open time trial in the Midlands District. However, National events and specific tricycle events are excluded. The data for the rankings are taken from the national CTT website so only those results which appear on the national website (or are sent directly to the rankings compilers) are included. All organisers have been asked to send in their results to the CTT but the compilers of the Midlands Rankings cannot be held responsible for missing results if they are not on the national website. Points are based on placings. The first placed rider receives 200 points. The remaining riders score points in proportion to the number of riders that they have beaten. The formula for calculating your points score is: ((Number of people you beat or equal + 1) ÷ (number of finishers)) x 200 This is rounded to the nearest whole number Your best 5 points scores are added to give your ranking points total. The thresholds for the categories are as follows: Category Men Women Points Points Elite 960 or over 810 or over 1st Category 900 or over 720 or over 2nd Category 800 or over 540 or over 3rd Category 600 or over 360 or over 4th Category below 600 below 360 Points The aim of the category thresholds is to achieve a category system which is analogous to the British Cycling category system. The proportions of riders in each category are therefore broadly similar to those of road racers. The men's thresholds are based on 96%, 90%, 80% and 60% of the maximum possible score of 1000 points. The women's thresholds are based on a "theoretical" maximum points of 900. The percentages for each category threshold are: 90%, 80%, 60% and 40%. The category bands for women are broader than the men's categories to account for the fact that the women have to complete against the men in order to attain their points. Where separate men's and women's events have been held, the results for the men and women combined are sorted, so that the women's placings are amongst the men, before ranking points are allocated. This is to ensure that women riding separate events do not have an advantage over women who ride only mixed events. The Midlands Rankings will be republished on the 15th of each month on a 12-month rolling basis.
