Speedy Kev
Tommy Godwin Challenge ride report27/9/2015 signing on before the start in glorious sun shine...The intrepid Saracens who took on the 2015 challengeChris Pardoe............ just plain hardJohn Poole................powerhouseColin Amor................mystery manKevin Young.............red rag to a bullHannah Smith...........angry fixedOwen Hazlewood.....aero eleganceKevin Sargent...........spin to winLynn Harris...............hybrid today, disc tomorrow... Pre ride nerves clearly showing for the Saracen elite riders.....My day started at 6am, my kit was all prepped the night before, so all I had to do eat, get changed and go. Thinking ahead, I fitted my HR strap, lobbed the bike into the car, and was off.......To Owen and Hannahs at least, we squeezed three bikes and three people into O's car and we were off........Sat naving our way to the Metropolis of Solihull, we parked at the start and disembarked, then Owen puts his shoes on... Owens actual shoes.... Lynn actual Harris...... Hannah's actual cog. ... some time later we roll to the HQ, sign on and meet up with the other Saracens, as we shuffle towards the start line, there is a funny feeling in my tummy, we shuffle onwards, something's definitely up, the line looms close, and, Bang, their it goes, my HR strap drops down my chest, and is lodged around my belly!!... the safety preamble is underway, but I'm not listening, my hands are down my shorts desperately trying to ram the HR strap back to its rightful place, the flag hand goes up, but the HR strap does not. We ride....The first 10 miles or so where just navigating safely down the lanes, passing loads of cyclists, the odd horse, avoiding pot holes etc, I feel the call of the open road, and have to ride at my own pace, K Young, O Hazlewood, J Poole, and K Sargent blast to the feed at Great Alne... The feed zone at Great Alne, bikes and cakes.... and Eddie Smith...My inner Kev tells me to get going, so I say 'adieu' and off I go ......The second half is definitely lumpier than the first, and there are a lot less sportivers around for reassurance, and the direction arrows are a tad small... but Garmin guides me and tells me I've done 50 miles, and there are no more hills, I go into TT mode, (as good as Kev get that is). Rolling into the finish I get three of my favorite things... cakes... a debriefing.... and a medal!!! special mention to 'Andy' rode it fixed, flat pedals, when asked " what gear??" Andy casually answers "dunno..." OK, so Saracens Hannah and Owen both rode fixed as well.... Congrats to all involved organisers, volunteers and cyclist. Great day out.Event photography at http://www.mikeadamsphotography.biz/Cycling/Road/Tommy-Godwin-Sportive-100km-20/ ...
