SARACEN RC AUDAX 19/4/2015

2vhte38.jpg,

jULIE'S CAFE IN DROITWICH,                                                     THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM...

Audax, from the Latin, meaning "bold, daring or brave" so appropriate for cycling.

81 Audaxers, listening to the ride instructions, waiting for the start...

I have to hold my hands up, within the first mile, I had led everyone the wrong way!! a quick U-turn, and we where off for real. A fairly large group had formed, and we steam rollered our way through Bishampton and Fladbury, so far, so good.

We all got our Brevet cards stamped at Raphael's in Evesham, but didn't hang around, this is where the nucleus of 5 started, all Saracen RC riders.

O. Hazlewood                   steel                      (abit coldy)

M. Hazlewood                   carbon                  (strangely quite)

L. D. Grey                         aluminium             (coiled spring)

K.Young                            carbon                  (1st navigator)

K. Sargent                        aluminium             (2nd navigator)

The road between Evesham and Charlcote turn into a drag race, with all riders contributing to a fast run in to the second check point, special mention must go to L.D.Grey he powered us along, stringing out the group, no one was coming through, red zone etc...

Second check point- Charlecote.                                 feeding time at the zoo....

the final leg beckoned, all fuelled up we set off, just as the next group riders are coming in. we settle in quickly, K. Young sets a high pace, all do turns, for some reason, I'm off the front, it's not an attacking move, just I'm off the front, I keep going!!  Owen rides across,

" is there a gap?"

"yep"

"come through"

"nope"

the highest point at Cookhill is crested, we are on the Saltway, Lee opens up with the big guns, we all tuck in behind, If anyone is going to attack, we are running out of road, rapidly!!

We all roll into Droitwich, traffic, traffic lights, pot holes etc negate an actual sprint finish, which I think is the right result, as we all finish together.

Garmin Stats      71 miles, 877m ascent,  av cadence 91, av HR 163, max HR 197

Thanks to all involved in organising and helping out, and congrats fellow Audaxers!!

Bonus photos.

Great report as usual Kevin.

You guys are clearly showing the benefit of the warm weather training and your race training programme.

On a personal note I'm really looking forward to following you throughout the summer season.

Also great to be able to say that all of today's starters finished safely and inside the time limit, that is to say no one too fast or too slow

Well done everyone

A steadier group of about 14 riders formed after leaving Driotwich.

Mainly Saracen riders with a few Stafford CC members brought down by our

man in Stafford John Burton of Henry Burton cycles.

An old friend of mine from Dorset successfully completed the run having only just returned to cycling

after a 30 year lay of we raced together along with John Shelley and Mike McClure when in our teens.

Our pace wasn't quite as brisk as Speedy's but we managed.

Av speed 16.3mph

Cadence variable  0-120

my HR max 140  Av 108

senior moment out on the road forgot to get the camera out of pocket but have some pic's before and after as follows.

This is the way for old school friends kept together by many years of cycling to finish of a great day out.

A few beers a glass or two of wine a Chinese take away and a bloody good laugh about what we used to do.

Tha'ts what friends are for!!!

John had very rosy cheeks and Ann a little giggly and wobbly on her legs.

May be it was that last bottle of red that was over the edge ?
