Expected Component Life

My Pinarello has done 577.6miles (Garmin Data) in its entire life.

It has just had to have the headset (?headset bearings? £19-99) and rear free hub (?rear free hub bearings??) replaced.

My Mercian has done 2,175.1miles (Garmin Data) and both were still fine at its recent service.

How long should components last? Is there such a thing as premature component failure?

If so what am I doing wrong?

There seems no rhyme or reason to the longevity of components. Take the Shimano drivetrain on my main bike. It sheared off after less than a thousand miles, whereas I cycled to Istanbul and back on one and it was fine when I got back.

I can't help thinking that the reduced lifespan of components these days is the near obsession with their weight.. Surely you can't possible keep shaving weight off everything without compromising their structural integrity?
